The Importance of Regular Septic Pumping in Phoenix

Here at Belsito Plumbing, we understand the critical role that septic pumping plays in maintaining a healthy and efficient septic system. With years of experience serving the Phoenix area, we have witnessed the consequences of neglecting septic maintenance firsthand. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the significance of regular septic pumping and how it contributes to the longevity and functionality of your septic system.

Understanding Septic Systems

Before we delve into the importance of septic pumping, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of how septic systems function. Septic systems are underground wastewater treatment structures commonly used in areas without centralized sewer systems. They are composed of two primary components: the septic tank and the drainfield.

The Septic Tank

The septic tank is a large, watertight container made of concrete, fiberglass, or plastic. It is buried underground and is responsible for holding and treating the wastewater produced by your household. As wastewater enters the septic tank, it undergoes a natural separation process. Solid waste settles to the bottom, forming a layer of sludge, while lighter materials, such as grease and oil, float to the top, forming a scum layer. The liquid effluent, which is relatively clearer, remains in the middle.

The Drainfield

The drainfield, also known as the leach bed (see our article how to find your drainfield/leach bed), is a network of perforated pipes or chambers connected to the septic tank. Its purpose is to disperse the treated wastewater into the surrounding soil, allowing for further purification through natural biological processes. The soil acts as a filter, removing harmful bacteria, viruses, and nutrients from the effluent.

Avoid Septic Tank Problems, With Regular Septic Tank Maintenance:

1) There should always be a healthy colony of bacteria living, eating, and digesting waste within the septic tank. After the septic tank is pumped, a small amount of sludge will remain in the bottom of the trap. This promotes bacteria growth, which is necessary to breakdown solids.

2) A common cause of early septic tank failure is improper maintenance by the homeowner, despite the cost of preventive maintenance being quite minimal when compared to the cost of a new tank installation.

These guys have shown up to my house on multiple occasions for various reasons. It's been the same guy each time. Always friendly and smiling with a good attitude about whatever he's about to get into. This last time it was a stuck grinder pump in the basement. A gross endeavor. But, the positive attitude prevailed. Repaired for a very reasonable price considering the task. Would highly recommend and would use again when necessary. Thank you, Belsito.

Frequently Asked Questions about Septic Tank Maintenance

How long can a septic tank go without being pumped?

How often a septic tank needs to be pumped depends on its size, the number of people in the household and their water usage. Typically, your average residential septic tank should be pumped every 3 to 5 years to keep it in good working order.

How long does it take to empty a 1,000 gallon septic tank?

It takes a professional plumber with the right equipment around 20 to 30 minutes to empty a 1,000 gallon septic tank. A larger tank (1,500 to 2,500 gallon) will take twice as long, ie, approximately 45 to 60 minutes to be fully drained.

What are the signs that your septic tank needs to be pumped?

If maintained properly, your septic tank can provide you with reliable service for years, but every tank fills up, so, how do you know if it’s time for your septic tank to be?

1. A foul stench

If your septic tank is full, it will smell… Bad. As your tank collects all of your household wastewater, that means toilet water is in there too… And that means your septic system will hold solid, sludgy waste along with liquid waste.  If you’re outside and notice and unnatural stench emanating from the drain field’s direction, then it’s a safe bet your tank is full.

2. Pooling water around the drain field

The first sign that your septic system needs to be serviced is pooling water around the drain field. Pooling water is one indication that the tank is full.  When the septic system is working as it should, wastewater remains underground and out of sight.

3. Slow drains.

Sinks or toilets emptying slowly are dead giveaway that the septic tank is full.  If you’ve tried using commercial drain cleaners with no avail, odds are your septic tank is full.

4. Sewage backup

Foul smelling sewage coming back up the drain is another telltale sign that the septic tank is full. You see that, you’re picking up the phone to our emergency plumbing services.

5. Drain field grass is looking great… Too great!

Should the grass appear greener around your septic tank and its drain field, then that mean the septic tank or system is failing or at the very least needs to be pumped. Overly full tanks create a backup of solid waste, which usually escapes into the soil around the drain field.

6. Elevated levels of Nitrates

Well water with unhealthy levels of nitrates is the final sign that your septic tank is full which in turn causes bacteria and nitrates to leach into the soil and surrounding well water.

Rule of thumb:

If all else fails, remember this rule of thumb. Have your septic tank pumped every 3 to 5 years.
